Dental emergencies
A dental problem that can't wait
What counts, what to do first, and how to reach us.
Call us first for a broken or knocked-out tooth, a toothache that won't ease, a lost filling or crown, or a swollen gum. We'll tell you whether to walk in, when to come and what to do until then.
If anything affects your breathing or swallowing, don't wait for us. Go to an emergency room or call 911.
- Swelling that spreads to your face, eye or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, a serious blow to the head, or bleeding that won't stop needs emergency care now. Go to an emergency room or call 911. If a tooth is knocked out or broken, call our office right away.
What counts, and what to do first
- 01
Step 1: A broken or knocked-out tooth
Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently if it's dirty and keep it in a cup of milk. Keep any broken piece, and call us right away.
- 02
Step 2: A toothache that won't ease
Rinse with warm water and floss gently in case food is stuck. Don't put aspirin against the gum. Call us and say how long it has hurt.
- 03
Step 3: A swollen gum or cheek
Call us the same day. If the swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, or you have trouble swallowing, go to an emergency room.
- 04
Step 4: A lost filling or crown
Keep the crown or filling and call us. Until your visit, cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum and chew on the other side.

Questions about emergencies
Do you take walk-ins?
Yes, during open hours. We see walk-ins between booked visits, so the wait changes with the day. Call first and we'll tell you how the schedule looks. We can't promise a visit, and we'll say so honestly if you need to come back.
Can I get a written estimate before treatment?
Yes. You get one before any treatment, including after a walk-in exam. It lists each step and its fee.
Do I have to be a patient?
No. Call us and tell us what's happening.
Call before you come in
We answer the office line during open hours and tell you where the day stands.
