Root canal treatment
Treating the inside of a tooth whose nerve is infected or hurt, so the tooth can stay in your mouth.
Some root canals are done here by a general dentist. If your tooth is hard to reach or the roots are curved, the dentist may suggest another office that does only root canals, and tells you why.

A written estimate before treatment

What happens
One to two visits for the root canal, and another for the crown or filling that protects the tooth.
- 01
Step 1: Find the problem
The dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray and explains what is wrong.
- 02
Step 2: Numbing
We numb the tooth and wait until you can't feel it.
- 03
Step 3: Cleaning the inside
The dentist removes the infected or damaged tissue and cleans the space inside the tooth.
- 04
Step 4: Sealing and the next step
The space is filled and sealed. Most treated teeth then need a filling or a crown, which is a second visit.
Before you decide
Comfort
Numbing works as it does for a filling. Most people feel pressure, not pain, and we stop whenever you ask.
Other options, and waiting
The other choices are removing the tooth, or waiting. If the infection is left alone, it can spread and cause swelling, and treatment becomes larger.
Risks and after-care
A treated tooth can be sore for a few days, and it can still crack or get new decay. Rarely the infection returns and the tooth needs more care or removal. The dentist explains the risks before starting.
How it's billed
You get a written estimate for the root canal and for the crown that follows it, and we tell you what your plan says it covers.

Questions about root canal treatment
Can I have a root canal as a walk-in?
A walk-in visit can find the problem and ease it. A root canal needs a longer appointment, so we'll usually book you.
Will I need a crown afterward?
Often, because a treated tooth can be weak. The dentist tells you whether yours needs one.
