Tooth removal
Taking out a tooth that can't be saved, or that is causing trouble.
Before removing a tooth, the dentist tells you whether it could be saved, what removal involves and what comes next. For a tooth that needs surgery, we refer you to an office that does it.

What happens
Usually one visit. A tooth broken below the gum line, or a wisdom tooth, may need another office, and we tell you at the exam.
- 01
Step 1: Look and talk
The dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray and explains the choices.
- 02
Step 2: Numbing
We numb the area and test it before we begin.
- 03
Step 3: Removal
The dentist loosens the tooth and takes it out. You feel pressure. Tell us if you feel sharp pain and we'll stop.
- 04
Step 4: After
You bite on gauze, and you leave with written after-care instructions and a number to call.
Before you decide
Comfort
We numb the area first and check that you can't feel it. Ask for a pause at any time.
Other options, and waiting
Some teeth can be saved with a root canal and a crown. After a removal, the gap can be left, or filled with a bridge, a partial denture or an implant, which we refer for. A tooth left in place when it needs to come out can spread infection.
Risks and after-care
Bleeding, soreness and swelling are normal for a few days. A painful dry socket can follow a few days later, so call us if the pain gets worse instead of better. Bleeding that won't stop needs emergency care.
How it's billed
You get a written estimate before the removal, and we tell you what your plan says it covers.

Questions about tooth removal
Can a tooth be taken out on a walk-in?
If the dentist finds it needs to come out and there's time in the schedule, sometimes. Otherwise we book the next opening and tell you what to do until then.
What should I do after?
Bite on the gauze, skip straws and spitting for a day, and rinse gently the next day. Your written instructions cover the rest.
What if the bleeding won't stop?
Call us. If it won't stop, go to an emergency room or call 911.
